Councilmember Maria Alegria

Maria Alegria, elected in 1992, will be serving a fourth term to the Pinole City Council. She has served three terms as Mayor from 1995-96, 1998-99 and 2002-2003. She represents a suburban semi-rural community nestled near the San Pablo Bay and the rolling hills of the western part of Contra Costa County. She has served on the League of California Cities Board of Directors as an At-Large Director since 1999. She is currently the 2nd Vice President.

Ms. Alegria is currently the Executive Director of Contra Costa Faith Works!, a collaborative of organized labor and interfaith organizations in Contra Costa County advocating for public policy solutions that promote social, economic and environmental justice for its residents.

Ms. Alegria was the recipient of the 2005 Contra Costa College Women’s History Celebration Award for Social Justice; 2003 Community College League of California Distinguished Alumna Award, the 1993 Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) Community Service Award, the 1993 Excellence in Hispanic Leadership Award from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Contra Costa County, and the 1994 Faith and Justice Award from Catholic Charities of the East Bay, Diocese of Oakland.

Maria Alegria, a native of Contra Costa County, attended Contra Costa Community College, the University of California at San Diego and is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.

She is married to Andres F. Alegria. They have four children and one grandchild. Their daughter, Maria Carmen is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley and their youngest son, Andres, is a sophomore at UC Santa Cruz.

FAITHWORKS!

Maria is currently the Executive Director of Contra Costa Faith Works!, a collaborative of organized labor and interfaith organizations in Contra Costa County advocating for public policy solutions that promote social, economic and environmental justice for its residents. Faith Works! is currently involved in several projects including Just Cause/Fair Rent in Richmond.
